19th century ornamental cast iron figural doorknob and matching monogrammed backplate from the historic Fisher building located in downtown Chicago. the finely detailed doorknob features a centrally located aquatic creature within a foliated cartouche or bade, surrounded by a bayleaf border. the rectangular--shaped backplate contains a rope border and intricate gothic tracery surrounding the encircled letter "f." the antique american doorknob and matching backplate were designed and fabricated by the yale & towne mfg. co., stamford, ct. the fisher building is a 20-story, 275 foot tall neo-gothic landmark building in the Chicago loop community area of Chicago. commissioned by paper magnate lucius fisher, the original building was completed in 1896 by d.h. burnham & company> This doorknob opens up to create inkwell or small covered dish and has attached pen holder.
